Liga MX playoffs 2016: Bracket, schedule and scores

Everything you need to know to follow the Liguilla playoffs.

Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports

The Liga MX playoffs are underway, and they’re well worth tuning into for any soccer fan. For one thing, they’re just about the most easily accessible soccer tournament around -- all of the games are on American TV and many are on Univision, which is in most American households. And besides that, it’s just generally a blast. Liga MX features a lot of scoring, crazy fans and occasional fights. It’s the tournament responsible for this amazing GIF where “Piojo” Miguel Herrera goes Super Saiyan.

This season, the first round features two massive rivalries. Monterrey’s two biggest clubs, Monterrey and Tigres, have been drawn together. Even bigger than that is the Super Clásico quarterfinal between Chivas Guadalajara and Club America of Mexico City.

Liga MX has some bizarre tiebreaker and seed rules. There’s some standard stuff -- teams play two-legged ties, home and away, with aggregate goals winning. Away goals are the first tiebreaker. But after that, there’s no extra time or penalties. Instead, regular season performance is rewarded by giving the higher seed progression to the next round in the event of a draw on aggregate score and away goals. The final is also two-legged, but does not use away goals or the seed tiebreaker. In that round, there will be extra time and penalties in the event of an aggregate draw. Teams are re-seeded each round, rewarding regular season performance again.

Here’s everything you need to know and how to follow along.
