According to the Telegraph and the BBC, who are both reporting the news independently, van Gaal will formally learn his fate on Monday. The next day, Jose Mourinho will be introduced as Manchester United manager. However, it wouldn’t be shocking if the leaking of this information altered that timeline.
Mourinho has been linked to the job for most of the season since United were knocked out of the Champions League. Their league form hasn’t been that much better and the Red Devils failed to finish in the top four. Mourinho will inherit a team in the Europa League and face stiff competition to get back into the top four.
As soon as March, it was reported that Mourinho already had a pre-agreement with United to take over as manager. Whether or not that’s true may never be known, but regardless, an FA Cup win couldn’t save van Gaal. He promised a revolution and he didn’t deliver. He’ll be departing after two very disappointing years, even if they did end with a trophy.
