That’s because Ecuador are lurking just two points behind after earning draws with both Brazil and Peru, and they’re set to battle the same Haiti team that Peru edged and Brazil obliterated earlier in the group stage. A win for them would put them on five points -- one point above either Brazil or Peru should there be a loser in their contest. It should also be known that a draw suits Brazil just fine -- they’d still finish first if Ecuador wins thanks to their goal differential, while Peru could still be eliminated if Ecuador win their game by two or more goals.
Of course, if Ecuador lose or draw against Haiti, they’re out. And because their match is played first thanks to the bizarre structure of this tournament -- last-round group stage matches are generally played simultaneously -- Brazil and Peru will have nothing to play for but positioning in this game, and the stakes will be all but gone. Let’s hope for an Ecuador win and some drama, eh?
