Things haven’t exactly been going to plan of late for Barcelona, with their loss in the first leg of their Copa del Rey tie against Athletic Bilbao being a rather low point in their recent struggles for form and quality. While the final score of 2-1 isn’t awful and leaves them in a fair position to advance, the performance that drove that result is still cause for concern.

Barcelona have some work to do if they’re going to advance in the Copa del Rey.

Simply put, Barcelona got outplayed by a team that they should have handled with ease. Now and then Barcelona get caught off guard with over-rotation or sheer overconfidence, but against Athletic, Barcelona just got straight-up beaten. That’s a serious concern for the Blaugrana and their fans, and it’s one they need to fix soon.
Now, they’re not in an unrecoverable hole as far as this tie goes — Barcelona’s away goal in that first match gives them a tiebreaker as long as they can hold Athletic scoreless, meaning they need just one goal to win. It’s not perfect, but it will at least make their path to the next round easier.
