Tottenham Hotspur have had something of an up-and-down season, one that flies in stark contrast to local rivals and Wednesday’s opponents, English Premier League-leading Chelsea. Where the Blues have only risen higher and higher, Tottenham have seen some rises and falls in their form and quality — but right now they’re rising, and spoiling for a fight with their rivals.

Many of Spurs’ issues this season have had to do with ill-timed injuries that have come en masse, but right now they’re healthy and playing extremely well. They’ve won four matches in a row -- admittedly, that pales in comparison to Chelsea’s 13-game league winning streak — and are starting to look like a potential and genuine threat to the top end of the table again. This should be an exciting match, and one well worth two hours of your Wednesday afternoon.

TV: NBCSN (U.S. - English), NBC Universo (U.S. - Spanish), Sky Sports 1/HD (U.K.)

Online: NBC Sports Live (U.S.), Sky Go (U.K.)

Match Date/Time: Wednesday, 3 p.m. ET, 8 p.m. local

Venue: White Hart Lane, London, England

Three big things to know

  1. Simply put, this is a huge match, arguably one of the biggest of the EPL season so far. Thanks to Chelsea’s title rivals struggling at midweek, they can pull a full eight points clear of second-place Liverpool, a commanding lead and a difficult one to surpass at this point in the season. Opening up such a lead just past the halfway point of the season is something Chelsea have to be focused on, and a huge goal to reach.
  2. Tottenham aren’t without opportunity here, either, and this match is just as big for them as it is for Chelsea. A win would not only cause a shock upset to the commanding league leaders, cutting short a long winning streak that’s drawn much praise and acclaim, but move them into third place, bumping Arsenal out of the top four and moving Manchester City down to fourth. It would also see them move to just two points out of second place and seven behind league-leading Chelsea, and that’s an opportunity that’s worth a lot to Tottenham right now.
  3. All that opportunity on both sides leading into this match means that there’s going to be a lot of pressure, and a lot of intensity shoved into all those 90 minutes on the pitch. That’s before you even consider that this has been one of the more fun London derbies in recent years. This should be an eye-opening match, and if you miss it, you will regret it.
