For the last few years, Chile have been the surprising and entertaining kings of football in South America, much to Brazil’s chagrin. On Tuesday, though, Brazil can reclaim that spot, by not only eclipsing the 40-point mark in CONMEBOL qualifying with their 12th win of the group, but also potentially knocking Chile out of the World Cup entirely.

Chile’s grasp on third place in qualifying is tenuous at best right now, with three losses in their last five qualifying matches and just a one-point cushion over currently non-qualifying Argentina in sixth place. There is no margin for error for Chile right now, and even a draw could potentially spell doom for them if other results go against them.

So having to go to São Paulo to face Brazil in such a crucial moment is a daunting task for Chile right now. Yes, Chile beat Brazil all the way back at the start of CONMEBOL qualifying back in 2015, but that is their only win over Brazil since 2000, including getting eliminated by Brazil in the first knockout round at the 2014 World Cup. That is a long time without a win over one of their biggest rivals, and even with all the recent success Chile have had in the Copa América, that’s a massive hill to climb and a mountain of pressure to overcome.
