Coming into the match, Peru are in fifth place in CONMEBOL’s qualification group, giving them the inter-confederation playoff spot. But they’re just one little point behind Colombia in fourth place — and the same distance behind third-place Chile, for that matter — meaning that a win would vault them over Colombia and into a qualification spot.
A loss for Colombia would put them on desperate ground, because both Argentina and Paraguay would then be in a position to pass them up in the standings and knock them out of the qualifying places altogether. Colombia fans will be watching this match with one eye on the action and one eye on other scores, because they have very, very little room for error right now.
