But focus isn’t always as easy as it sounds with Real Madrid and cup matches against lower-division sides like Segunda B representatives Fuenlabrada. Madrid fans hear the names Real Union and Alcorcon and cringe, having fallen at the hands of the then-second and third division sides in famous cup upsets in 2008 and 2009, respectively. The odds of another such upset seem low, but it seemed low at the time, too.
Of course, these days the gulf between third-division sides and a megateam like Real Madrid is wider than ever, and even Madrid’s bench and the younger players expected to be called in can probably upend a team like Fuenlabrada with relative ease.
