Bayern Munich are in something of a must-win situation in the Champions League this week, but they’ll be making a tough trip to Scotland to face Celtic FC with a shorthanded attack to do so.

Bayern need to dominate Celtic once more to all but secure their spot in the Champions League knockout rounds.
Bayern need a win to all but secure a spot in the knockout rounds of the Champions League, and on the surface they’re in good shape to do just that, facing a Celtic side that they beat 3-0 in Germany two weeks ago and has been a bit uneven in their performances since then.
But with both Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller missing out with injuries, interim Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes is facing some issues with a thin attack. He has no one in the squad who can naturally fill in at striker in his preferred 4-2-3-1 shape, forcing him to play at least one player out of position and even potentially forcing him to change that shape in order to put a functioning attack onto the pitch.
Of course, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is sweating too, with two of his key center backs out in the form of Erik Sviatchenko and Jozo Simunovic. Dedryck Boyata is a solid enough defender, but Celtic don’t really have a fourth natural center back to lean on of the kind of quality needed to play at a high level against Bayern — Mikael Lustig and Cristian Gamboa can play in the middle if needed, but that’s not a matchup that will be very pretty for Celtic fans to watch.
