The intercontinental, inter-confederation playoffs that serve as the final step of World Cup qualifying always bring us some intriguing matchups, and this year is no different. A spot in the 2018 World Cup awaits the winner of this tie between Honduras and Australia, and their duel gets underway on Friday in San Pedro Sula.
Honduras vs. Australia 2017 live stream: Time, TV schedule, and how to watch World Cup qualifier online
This is a fascinating inter-confederation matchup for a spot in the 2018 World Cup.

Honduras have quietly started to become one of the better teams in CONCACAF in recent years, though they’re mainly here in this cycle because of the United States’ collapse in form and quality during the Hex. Still, Los Catrachos are a talented team in their own right, and their results and performances have shown that in the last couple of years. If they can get past Australia in this qualifying playoff, they can make a third straight World Cup for the first time in their country’s history.
But beating Australia is not a given for Honduras, because the Socceroos are a very capable team themselves. Spurred on by an Asian Cup championship in 2015, Australia did very well in qualifying, coming in third in by far the tougher of the two Asian qualifying groups with just one loss. They also did decently in the Confederations Cup this summer, drawing Chile and Cameroon, and despite losing to eventual champions Germany, they also forced perhaps the best performance the Germans had all tournament out of them.
Honduras’ grinding style with sudden lightning-quick counters and Australia’s free-wheeling, all-action setup make for an interesting matchup, and it’s going to be interesting to see what wrinkles they throw at each other in the first leg of this tie with so much on the line. Stay tuned, because this has the potential to be a very, very fun matchup.
