The World Cup is the promised land for national teams and their players, but there’s only so many places in out to go around. With the intercontinental playoffs in swing, New Zealand and Peru will slug it out for one of the last few spots in Russia next summer, and this promises to be an exciting tie.

A World Cup berth has been a rarity for both teams, with Peru only ever making it four times in their history, the last coming 35 years ago in 1982. That was the year New Zealand made their first World Cup appearance, with their only other coming in 2010.
That scarcity of glory puts tremendous weight on this tie for both teams, who already were facing difficulty because of the sheer travel involved for both legs. Both teams are also seriously underrated, having talent beyond what many expect from them and putting in the performances to match. Peru especially impressed during the later stages of qualifying in South America, taking full advantage of several bigger teams struggling and putting in magnificent performances of their own to go from dead in qualifying to come within inches of direct qualification.
This has the potential to be a very fun tie indeed, with two teams who will leave it all out on the pitch going head to head. Hang on, because it could be a wild ride.
