Italy are staring at a strong possibility of failing to make the World Cup in 2018, thanks to losing the first leg of their playoff qualifying tie against Sweden, 1-0. The second leg is being played in the hallowed grounds of the Stadio San Siro, though, and Gli Azzurri will be hoping that will be the advantage they need to overcome their deficit.

Sweden hold a narrow 1-0 lead in this crucial tie.

They’ll also need to see improved tactics and play, though, because the first leg was badly mishandled by manager Gian Piero Ventura. After leaving his best playmaker — Lorenzo Insigne — on the bench for the first hour of the match and starting a badly unbalanced midfield, Italy struggled to maintain possession and do much with it that pushed the ball effectively into the final third. That gave Sweden all the time they needed to pick out their best attacks, and it was little surprise that they took a crucial lead in the tie.
Ventura did eventually put Insigne on the pitch in that match, but in doing so removed Marco Verratti, the one midfielder in the lineup who had a chance of linking up with Insigne to try and chase an equalizer. This time around, Italy cannot afford such imbalances and poor decisions — they have no more margin for error, especially if their defense allows Sweden to score a tiebreaking away goal. Italy haven’t missed the World Cup since 1958 — which in the case of this tie was ironically hosted in Sweden — and if they fail to qualify here it would be nothing short of a disaster for their national team program.
