The Champions League loves to give us exciting matchups with sky-high stakes, and that’s what we’re going to get with this match in Germany between Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham Hotspur. Dortmund are in a must-win situation, with their European future on the line in this match.

Dortmund have won just two points in Group H so far this season in what’s been a rough overall campaign for them. They’re all but out of the Champions League knockout rounds already — just one point earned by Real Madrid in their match against APOEL will put them out no matter what their result against Tottenham is — and a loss here will put them in dire straits for hopes of at least staying in the Europa League coming into their final match against APOEL.
Tottenham have plenty to play for as well despite sitting in first place and having gone unbeaten so far in the group. They have only a three-point cushion on Madrid right now, so if they want to finish in first place, they need a win on Tuesday and almost certainly will need a point in their final group stage match to secure that spot. Anything less and they risk Real Madrid catching up late, so don’t expect the Spurs to rest on their laurels and go easy on a team that they’ve already beaten once in the group stage.
Fascinatingly, there have been only three different scorelines throughout all of Group H in the first four rounds of matches — 3-1, 3-0, or 1-1. Will these two teams break that trend, or are we going to see a repeat of history? Their first meeting was one of the three 3-1 finishes of the group stage so far, and both teams were involved in the other two, with Dortmund coming up on the short end of a 3-1 game against Real Madrid, and the Spurs topping Madrid by the same scoreline earlier this month.
Both teams have big concerns in defense thanks to injuries, with six key defenders or defensive midfielders hurt between both teams. Tottenham Hotspur will be without Toby Alderweireld and Victor Wanyama, while Borussia Dortmund are missing Erik Durm, Lukasz Piszczek, and Sebastian Rode, and Sokratis Papastathopoulos will be playing at less than 100 percent if he can even play at all.
That’s going to put a lot of pressure on the defenders who do take the field in such a crucial match for both teams, and this game could become much more wide open because of it, though Dortmund may be without American winger Christian Pulisic who has a muscle injury that kept him out of training on Monday.
