Real Madrid has had a sputtering start to the La Liga season, while Barcelona is in first place with an undefeated record. But very little matters until El Clásico is played, and Saturday’s edition of the rivalry gives Madrid a chance to turn its season around.

Real Madrid needs a win over Barcelona to get back in the La Liga title race.

Los Merengues have captured three trophies this season, winning the UEFA Super Cup, Spanish Super Cup, and most recently the Club World Cup. But Madrid sits fourth in La Liga, 11 points behind Barca, and failed to win its Champions League group.
Neymar’s exit was expected to lead to a slight downturn in the Blaugrana’s fortunes, but Lionel Messi is putting together one of the best seasons of his career. He has 14 goals and five assists in La Liga play, and his partner Luis Suarez has chipped in with nine goals of his own.
Barcelona comes into El Clásico depleted a bit by injuries. Ousmane Dembele, Paco Alcacer and Samuel Umtiti are all out. Real Madrid, meanwhile, has a clean bill of health. Gareth Bale has recently returned to full training and is expected to play a part on Saturday.
