Borussia Dortmund are in Portugal for some Champions League action against Benfica, and they’re responding to what looks like a tricky matchup by appearing to set up for a ruthless counter attack.
Benfica vs. Borussia Dortmund lineups: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ready to star
Dortmund appear set to look for the counter attack in Portugal.

It’s a formation and approach similar to the one they used against RB Leipzig recently, a result that ended at just 1-0 but in terms of run of play could have ended in a much, much heavier victory. It moves freely, strikes fast, and has three ruthless attackers up top who all do well on the ball in the final third — that’s not something any team wants to face, especially with the excellent form Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is in.
Benfica’s formation looks like one that can hold up relatively well against it, but they will have to be at their absolute best to make sure they can hold Dortmund off and get something out of this. It’s not an impossible situation for Benfica, but they’re going to be hard-pressed from the very first whistle.
