Over the last four months, the teams of CONMEBOL have had plenty of time to assess where they stand in World Cup qualifying, and how to get to where they want to be. Right now, though, Colombia and Bolivia are left looking at a lot more questions than answers as they get set to play in Barranquilla, with both teams terrified of what could happen with a loss in this match.

Bolivia are already all but out of chances to make the World Cup despite their hopes of a stronger showing in this qualifying cycle. Colombia aren’t particularly enjoying their standing either, as they’re outside even the inter-continental playoff spot. They’ve struggled to find any kind of consistency during qualifying, including going winless in their last three World Cup qualifiers.

Colombia came into qualifying with much higher expectations than that -- they were a solid team in the last World Cup, and finished third in the Copa America last summer. That should have put them in a good position to qualify easily, but instead they’ve found themselves on the outside looking in. Jose Pekerman and his squad will not be satisfied with that, but they’ll also have to vastly improve their form and on-pitch quality if they’re actually going to find a way to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
