Right now, Colombia sit in fourth place, the final guaranteed spot to send a team to Russia in 2018. Ecuador are one point behind in fifth, the spot that will have to battle with a team from Oceania in a playoff tie to qualify. But because of the tight clustering of teams in the table right now, Colombia could potentially rise to second place with a win, while a win for Ecuador could see them potentially climb to third place and even with second-place Uruguay on points.
A loss for either team, though, could be disastrous — Colombia have just a three-point cushion on seventh-place Paraguay, a team that just picked up a big win over Ecuador last week. A loss and other results going against the loser would see them fall out of the qualifying places with little time to make up ground, meaning that the outcome of this match is vital, and the pressure on both teams is going to be incredibly high.
