Liverpool host Everton in the latest rekindling of the famous Merseyside rivalry on Saturday, with both sides having plenty to play for. Jürgen Klopp’s Reds may have recovered from their festive wobble, though still only find themselves six points clear of Everton in the league table.

Everton are currently three spots below fourth-placed Liverpool, and only two points adrift of fifth-placed Manchester United. Ronald Koeman has done a thoroughly impressive job since arriving from Southampton in the summer, and guiding the Toffees back into European competition at the first time of asking would be no mean feat.

However, their recent head-to-head record with their local rivals doesn’t make for pleasant reading. Not since 2010 have Everton managed to win a Merseyside derby, and you’ve got to go all the way back to 1999 for the last time the Toffees eked out a win at Anfield. It’s going to be no easy task.

That said, Liverpool have a fairly lengthy injury list at present, with attackers Danny Ings, Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana all on the treatment table. Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino face a race against time to recover from international duty, while Jordan Henderson will have to pass a late fitness test to play.

Meanwhile, Everton were dealt a serious blow over the international break with Séamus Coleman’s leg break. He joins Yannick Bolasie and Muhamed Bešić on the injured list, while Morgan Schneiderlin, James McCarthy and Ramiro Funes Mori all face late fitness tests.
