Against all odds, reigning Premier League champions Leicester City are England’s remaining Champions League representatives. Having achieved the remarkable feat of winning their domestic title last season, the Foxes are still looking to go one better and become European champions this time around. However, they come up against one of the big favourites in Wednesday’s quarterfinal first leg: Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid.
Atlético Madrid vs. Leicester City 2017: Start time, TV channel for Champions League
Atlético Madrid will look to bring Leicester back to Earth with a bump on Wednesday.
Atléti have been beaten finalists in this tournament twice in the last three seasons, losing on both occasions to cross-town rivals Real. However, they keep bouncing back with remarkable determination, and they’re strong favourites to beat Leicester and reach the final four.
The hosts head into this game on the back of an eight game unbeaten run in all competitions, including a draw with Real on the weekend. Leicester, meanwhile, had won six straight matches prior to the weekend, when their streak was finally broken away at Everton. Craig Shakespeare will be hoping for an immediate reaction away at the Calderón.
Atlético Madrid will be without long-term absentees Tiago and Augusto Fernández, while Miguel Ángel Moyá and Šime Vrsaljko are also on the treatment table. Kevin Gameiro and Nicolás Gaitán will have to pass late fitness tests to play. Leicester City’s biggest absentee is captain Wes Morgan, who is joined on the sidelines by Nampalys Mendy and Molla Wagué.
