Red-hot Tottenham Hotspur need to keep red-hot if they’re going to open up a gap on the teams behind them in the Premier League table and start trying to close the gap on Chelsea, and to do that they’ll need to beat every team in front of them. This weekend, that team is Watford FC, a talented but under-performing team that’s struggled to live up to expectations and hopes this season.

Spurs have been on a fantastic run of form, winning six matches in a row in all competitions, and winning seven of their last ten Premier League matches. They’ve overcome injuries and hardship several times already this season, and with just a little bit of luck on their side, they can mount a real title challenge this season — but they need to make part of that luck for themselves by continuing that excellent run of form for as long as they possibly can.

Watford FC were hoping to be a more competitive team this season, rather than the thoroughly mid-table team they’ve been. But bad luck with injuries and unfortunate results have meant that they’ve been doomed to mediocrity instead, which has left fans, players, and club staff alike frustrated. They’ve got the potential to be a much better team than they’ve been, but this has been a season in which little has gone right for the Hornets.

Watford is probably the team in the Premier League that’s hardest hit by injuries right now, with a full dozen players on their injury report, plus another player suspended for the match. Only six players — Sebastian Prodl, Mauro Zarate, Roberto Pereyra, Younes Kaboul, Ben Watson, and the suspended Miguel Britos — are either guaranteed or likely to be out, but the other seven walking wounded could be problematic for the Hornets against a fast and aggressive Spurs team. Especially since those players include key figures like Etienne Capoue, Troy Deeney, Tom Cleverly, and Valon Behrami. Manager Walter Mazzarri might have to make significant adjustments to his game plan to work around their lack of fitness.

Tottenham Hotspur aren’t completely healthy themselves, with both of their top goalkeepers — Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm — in doubt with the flu and a knee injury, respectively. Victor Wanyama and Harry Kane will be playing at less than full health, and three important players are out in Derrick Rose, Erik Lamela, and Harry Winks.
