Manchester is playing host to a match that, at the start of the season, looked like it would be just a trivial thing. Instead, it’s suddenly become an important match for both teams, as Manchester City and Hull City square off at the Etihad Stadium knowing that both teams have a lot on the line.

Despite sitting in fourth place, Manchester City have lately seen their form go from mediocre, to bad, to now helpless flailing of late. They haven’t won a match in almost a month, have only won one game in six, and looked poor in their loss to Chelsea at midweek. Their only respite is the fact that they’ve been facing tough competition in that time, but they’ve looked downright demoralized since losing their Champions League round of 16 tie to AS Monaco.

That’s not a trend that City can afford to have continue, having fallen to fourth place in the EPL table and with the gap to fifth place growing steadily smaller. They have a four-point cushion right now, but they can ill-afford any setbacks — and that means they have to take this match seriously, because even though Hull City are only 17th place in the table, they’ve won three of their last four, including a convincing 4-2 win over Middlesbrough just a few days ago.

Hull City are dealing with a few tough injuries and absences right now, with Tom Huddlestone suspended, each of Will Keane, Ryan Mason, Moses Odubajo, and Harry Maguire all out long-term, and Abel Hernandez, Dieumerci Mbokani, and Omar Elabdellaoui all in varying degrees of doubt for this match. That’s a lot of Hull’s better talent potentially sitting on the sideline, making it perhaps surprising that the Tigers have found the form they have of late.

Manchester City are faring somewhat better with injuries, but the missing trio of Bacary Sagna, Gabriel Jesus, and Ilkay Gundogan still represent a big chunk of missing talent. They have the depth to compensate, to be sure, but Pep Guardiola would much rather have those players available to give him the best tactical options that he can have.
