This season has been one long nightmare for Sunderland, and with Manchester United coming to the Stadium of Light, it looks like things are about to get even darker. They’re dead last in the relegation race, and with the way things are going, they’re not going to be climbing out of it any time soon.
Manchester United vs. Sunderland 2017 live stream: Start time, TV channel, and how to watch online
Sunderland desperately need relief from their nightmarish form, but it doesn’t look like help is coming against Manchester United.

Sunderland haven’t won since early February, a streak of futility spanning six matches, and their last win before that was in mid-December. Their form is, somehow, even worst than that — since the start of the year, they’ve scored just seven goals in thirteen matches, four of those in that lone win. That is a shocking run of futility, and one that makes it look like the Black Cats are doomed to relegation.
Manchester United will be hoping to use Sunderland’s poor form to their advantage, needing a big win after suffering through two-straight draws and seeing their efforts to reach the top four weaken. A big win over Sunderland here could help propel them back into better form and help boost their goal differential for tiebreaker purposes, two things that fans and players alike would be very, very eager to see happen.
Manchester United will be without several major players, with Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata, Chris Smalling, and Phil Jones all expected to miss out, plus Ashley Young is expected to play while carrying a bit of a knock from his last outing. Sunderland aren’t at full health either, with Jan Kirchhoff, Steven Pienaar, Duncan Watmore, and former Manchester player Paddy McNair all absent with various injuries.
