The first Europa League semifinal gets underway in Amsterdam on Wednesday, as Ajax play host to Olympique Lyonnais. It’s a tie which really is too close to call, and both sides will feel they have what it takes to go on to lift the trophy in Stockholm later this month. Lyon’s greater experience may well hand them the edge, though that only makes it more imperative that Ajax avoid shipping an away goal in the first leg.

Both sides rode their luck to make the final four: Nick Viergever and Amin Younes netted in extra time as Ajax overturned a late deficit away at Schalke; Lyon relied on a protracted penalty shootout to squeeze past Beşiktaş. They’ll be hoping — perhaps in vain — for a rather more routine affair this time around.

Ajax will be without defenders Viergever and Joël Veltman, who are both suspended. However, they should otherwise have a full complement of players available. Lyon will certainly be without January signing Memphis Depay, who is cup-tied after turning out for Manchester United in the Europa League earlier this season. Of even greater concern for the French outfit is the potential absence of talismanic striker Alexandre Lacazette, who faces a late fitness test.
