U.S. Soccer has $100 million lying around. What should it do with it?

When Traffic Sports and its partners got nailed in the FIFA scandal, the marketing rights to Copa America went back up for auction. They were awarded to Soccer United Marketing, which is the marketing arm of MLS and a partner of U.S. Soccer. Between that and the USMNT’s regular share of money that it’d get from a tournament, U.S. Soccer is swimming in cash.

SI’s Grant Wahl reports that USSF made $46 million off Copa America and now has a surplus of more than $100 million. U.S. Soccer isn’t sure what to do with all that money, but it’s probably going to use some of it on a national training center similar to France’s world renowned Clairefontaine.

But U.S. Soccer has other needs. Thankfully, it just used some of its money to more than double USWNT salaries. But it could also set up some more youth academies in places that aren’t currently served by Development Academy clubs. Or it could, as Will Parchman notes, hire some people to find the best talent.
