Following their losses to Germany and Chile during the first round of play, both Cameroon and Australia needed a win on Thursday to have a good chance to progress in the Confederations Cup. After a 1-1 draw, that’s looking unlikely for both sides.
Australia vs. Cameroon: Final score 1-1, both in trouble in Confederations Cup
After failing to beat each other, Cameroon and Australia are now favorites to get knocked out.

The Indomitable Lions didn’t create much of consequence during the first 35 minutes of the first half, but started to find more of the ball in the final 10 minutes, eventually leading to a goal. Cameroon took the lead in the 45th minute through Andre Zambo Anguissa, who chipped the ball over Mat Ryan after running onto a through ball from Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui.
Cameroon’s defense looked capable of holding Australia in the early part of the second half, but have away a penalty. Referee Milorad Mazic initially gave a corner in the 59th minute, but looked unsure of the call, and immediately called for help from the video assistant referee. The VAR deemed Ernest Mabouka’s challenge for the ball to be a foul on Alex Gersbach, and Mark Milligan converted from the spot to equalize.
But neither team could find a winning goal, or even force the opposing goalkeeper into making a difficult save. With only one point from two games and a more difficult game ahead of them, neither Australia or Cameroon will be happy with this result.
