Canada and Honduras are squaring off in a meeting with major implications in Group A of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, with this match likely to determine who advances out of their group to the knockout rounds. There’s a lot on the line in the Toyota Stadium as these two teams go head to head in the last match of the group, and it’s going to be an entertaining affair.

Canada currently sit atop the group with four points, having beaten French Guiana and fought Costa Rica to a standstill. That performance against Costa Rica highlighted how much improved Canada have become recently, going from an also-ran in CONCACAF to something of a dark horse competitor.

Honduras’ position is a bit more complicated — officially, they only have one point, though they’re almost guaranteed to get two more when the CONCACAF disciplinary committee rules on their match with French Guiana. Honduras’ opponents fielded an ineligible player in that match, so even though it ended in a 0-0 draw, Honduras will likely be awarded a 3-0 win for an automatic forfeiture.

That means Honduras will be one point behind Canada and second-place Costa Rica coming into the day, with Costa Rica nearly certain to go to seven points after their match with French Guiana. That will leave one spot for automatic advancement — if Canada win or draw, it’s theirs, but if Honduras can earn a win of their own, they’ll pass up Canada for second place. Whoever loses out on that spot will be in a good position to become one of the two third-place teams to advance, but both Canada and Honduras would much rather get that guaranteed spot.
