This season has seen an impressive rise in quality from Liverpool, who have gone from a fringe contender for the top four spots and barely qualifying for the Champions League a year ago to a clear top team in England. They need that success to translate over to the Champions League, though, starting with their Round of 16 tie against Porto.
Porto vs. Liverpool 2018 live stream: Time, TV schedule, and how to watch Champions League online
Liverpool have had a great Premier League campaign so far, but can they extend their success to the Champions League knockout rounds?
The once-mighty Portuguese side isn’t quite what they once were in terms of a European powerhouse, but Porto are still a solid side that’s sitting atop the table in what’s been a very competitive Primeira Liga campaign, and still put in a solid showing in a tough Champions League group that included RB Leipzig and AS Monaco. They’ve been a fun team to watch this season with the likes of Vincent Aboubakar, Tecatito, Moussa Morega, and Hector Herrera all having strong seasons, helping Porto to bounce back strongly from several down seasons for the somewhat fallen power club.
But Liverpool are also a team on the rise, lead by a jaw-dropping attacking trident of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, and Sadio Mane. Add a diverse and deep midfield behind them and an improving defense, and this is a team that can make some noise in the Champions League knockout rounds. They’re unlikely to make a run to the final, but they can make a strong statement of their return to the European power structure with a good showing, starting with a hopeful win in Portugal on Wednesday night.
