Sometimes a team puts on a brilliant group stage run and overcomes the odds and goes on to great glory. That was the case for Besiktas, which shocked Europe when they won their Champions League group in the fall. Sometimes, though, the rewards are almost more of a punishment — like, say, having to face a white-hot Bayern Munich side in the Round of 16.

Besiktas were picked by many — admittedly, myself included — to finish dead last in their Champions League group, which included eventual runners-up Porto and the more well-regarded AS Monaco and recently popular RB Leipzig. But Besiktas went unbeaten in the group stage, including a pair of wildly impressive road wins over Monaco and Leipzig. They were underdogs come good, and even with a smaller team filled with former stars past their prime or unheralded players, they took the Champions League by storm and earned their way to a huge accomplishment.

But now they have to face the reality of a deeply unfortunate draw for the first knockout round: a Bayern Munich side that’s overcome a difficult start to the season in style.

Bayern struggled out of the gates this season with an embarrassing 3-0 Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain, proving to be the final straw for Carlo Ancelotti’s managerial reign. With Bayern legend Jupp Heynckes back in charge as interim manager, the Bavarians have lost just once since then, running off 22 wins in 23 all-competitions matches since Heynckes took the reins. They have once again become the juggernaut they’ve always been capable of being, and Besiktas are going to have to play at the absolute peak of their ability to beat them, especially in Germany.
