The Champions League Round of 16 brings us a high-stakes matchup between two of the best teams in Europe as Chelsea host Barcelona in the first leg of the tie — but with both teams in rather strange form of late, it’s difficult to get a read on just what’s going to happen.

Chelsea have fallen to fourth place in the Premier League thanks to some rather all-or nothing form lately. In their last five matches, they have three wins of at least three goals each, but also have 3-0 and 4-1 losses to teams in the bottom half of the table. Given that run comes not long after a stretch of three straight scoreless draws, Antonio Conte has not been happy with the team he manages, and while they’ve looked better in their last two games, the specter of their recent struggles still looms large as they prepare to face Barcelona.

But Barcelona aren’t exactly swinging at their best form either coming into this tie — They’ve had a couple of very flat performances in draws to lower-table teams of late, and even some of their recent wins have lacked a certain edge that we saw from Barcelona earlier in the season. There’s no real way to predict how this match or this tie will go, given the high quality and off-kilter form both clubs are in, and in a very real way that makes it much more exciting and interesting to watch.
