The Champions League can bring us some interesting, somewhat unexpected matchups, and that seems to be the case with Manchester United heading to Spain to face Sevilla on Wednesday.

Manchester United come into this match in wildly uneven form, losing two of their last four without scoring a goal, but also having beaten Huddersfield twice — in the FA Cup and in the Premier League — without conceding a goal. Their form has gone through some pretty hefty swings back and forth all season long, and while on their day they can beat anyone, they’ve also struggled against most of the top six teams in England domestically.

But this is Europe, and they’ll be playing a very different team in Sevilla, who have had their own struggles this season in La Liga, but clawed their way through a Champions League group that was ultimately much tougher than advertised. They pulled late comeback draws against Liverpool twice and won both of their other home matches to get this far, and Vincenzo Montella has helped lead a tough-nosed side that responds well to challenges and hardship. That’s exactly the kind of attitude that an underdog team like Sevilla needs in the Champions League, and you can definitely expect this talented-if-unheralded side to give Jose Mourinho and Manchester United a tough fight in Seville.
