New York Red Bulls and Club Tijuana were two of the best teams in MLS and LigaMX last season, and on Tuesday they go toe to toe in a battle for a place in the CONCACAF Champions League semi-finals.

Tijuana have had an up-and-down Clausura campaign this season, but they sit in sixth place in LigaMX after taking care of business in a matter-of-fact win over Lobos BUAP last Friday. They reached the quarterfinal round by beating Honduran side Motagua 2-1 on aggregate in the round of 16, and they’re unbeaten in their last five matches in all competitions. Add in the fact that they’ve lost just once all season at the Estadio Caliente, and they’ll have high confidence heading into the first leg of this semifinal tie.

But New York are confident as well. They’re well rested after taking the weekend off, and handled a tricky tie against another very good Honduran team in CD Olimpia in fine fashion, getting a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Honduras before winning 2-0 at home. Jesse Marsch has his team well-drilled and while they’ve gotten little competitive action in this young American season, they’ll be ready for a major fight when they head to Tijuana.
