The Champions League Round of 16 has been a brutal slugfest so far, and Paris Saint-Germain are certainly showing a few bruises after their humbling 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in the first leg. Now at home in Paris, it’s time for PSG to prove that they can hang with the big boys in Europe, or suffer yet another humiliating early exit from the Champions League.

This hasn’t been a season that has seen PSG suffer many hardships, but their first leg loss to Madrid would certainly qualify. They’ve been on a tear since then, scoring 13 goals and allowing just two in four straight wins since then, but now also have to deal with the absence of Neymar thanks to his broken foot. Of course, they’re not without firepower in his absence — Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe are really good forwards — but losing their best player will still be a severe blow.

Real Madrid have had a busy schedule since the first leg, and except for one bizarre blip of a loss against Espanyol, their form has stayed excellent. In fact, beating PSG in the first leg may have finally started to awaken them from their season-long stupor of inconsistency, because they’ve been a step above their previous level for the last three weeks.

We’ll have to see if Madrid can keep this up, because they’re far from being safe right now — their 3-1 lead caries the risky factor of PSG holding an away goal tiebreaker coming into the match. Madrid will have to come out swinging hard and fast to get an away goal of their own, and if they can score early they can take a huge three-goal lead with that tiebreaker nullified. That might be too much for a Neymar-less PSG to overcome, so they’ll be looking to score as early as possible as well. It’s going to be a hectic, chaotic match — and that means it should be a lot of fun.
