FC Basel v Manchester City - UEFA Champions League Round of 16: First Leg
FC Basel v Manchester City - UEFA Champions League Round of 16: First Leg

One of several Champions League Round of 16 ties that was essentially over after the first leg, Manchester City come back home to the Etihad Stadium with a 4-0 lead in hand over FC Basel, brimming with confidence and looking to pad that lead en route to a berth in the quarterfinals.

The first match of the tie was almost over before it began, with City running out to a 3-0 lead before even 25 minutes had passed. To give full credit to Basel, they tried to fight back and score on Manchester — they didn’t just bunker down from the start and try to out-last their English opponents like we often see from smaller teams in the Champions League. But the gulf in talent level was just too high, and City smothered all of Basel’s attempts to find their way into the tie, leaving little doubt as to the final result even before the second leg kicks off.

Unfortunately for Basel, that loss seems to have sent their form spiraling a bit, suffering two straight 2-0 losses in the Swiss Super League before a power failure at the stadium forced the postponement of their match against Zurich last weekend. Perhaps that extra bit of rest will be enough to help Basel find their way again — though no matter what, it looks like Wednesday will be a long and difficult day for them, having to face Manchester again.
