The New England Patriots are 14-2 straight up and 12-4 against the spread in their last 16 games played on the road. After suffering a rare road loss to Jacksonville last Sunday, the Patriots will try to get back on track with a win on Sunday night against the Detroit Lions.

New England Patriots
The Patriots rarely find themselves on the wrong side of a lopsided game, but that’s exactly what happened last Sunday against Jacksonville. New England lost the total yardage battle 480 to 302, Tom Brady was out-dueled by Blake Bortles, and Jacksonville carried a 21-3 lead at the half into a 31-20 victory.
Of course, one early season loss isn’t going to worry the Patriots; the last two times they started a season 1-1 in 2014 and 2017, they went on to advance to the Super Bowl.
In their last four games against the Lions, the Patriots are 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS with an average margin of victory of 15.3 points per game per the OddsShark NFL Database.
Detroit Lions
Two late touchdowns helped the Lions to cover the spread as six-point underdogs on the road against the San Francisco 49ers last Sunday, but that doesn’t change the fact that this team is off to an awful start to the Matt Patricia era.
Patricia was brought in for his defensive expertise, and his team has allowed a whopping 39 points per game through its first two games. Detroit is 0-5 SU and 1-4 ATS in its last five games as a betting underdog.
Sunday night’s total is set at 53.5 points. The OVER is 8-2 in Detroit’s last 10 games at home.
The last thing this struggling Detroit team needed was an angry Patriots team in primetime. But that is exactly what they will get on Sunday night as New England will look to take out the frustration of last week on the Lions. Patricia should right the ship in Detroit eventually, but doing so against his old team this weekend feels like a long shot.
