Jets-Lions betting lines and point spread updates for ‘Monday Night Football’

The Jets and Lions open the annual “MNF” doubleheader in a matchup featuring the debut of rookie quarterback Sam Darnold. No surprise the odds favor Detroit.

Final score

The Jets destroyed the Lions in primetime. Sam Darnold threw a pick six to open the game, but Matthew Stafford threw four interceptions en route to the Jets winning 48-17. New York easily won outright and the game blew past the point total.

Injury reports

The Lions are in good shape from an injury perspective, with only reserve offensive tackle Andrew Donnal ruled out for the game. The Jets find themselves in a stickier situation. Starting outside linebacker Josh Martin has been ruled out due to a concussion, wide receiver Jermaine Kearse is doubtful with an abdomen injury, and strong safety Marcus Maye is doubtful with a foot injury.

Where is the money?

Earlier this week, William Hill was taking in more money on the Lions than the Jets. 62 percent of tickets were on the Jets, but 57 percent of the money was on the Lions. OddsShark is offering more updated numbers, and the online sportsbooks they track currently have 52 percent of the money on the Jets. Sam Darnold is a huge question mark as a rookie making his debut, but that’s a lot of points for a shaky Lions defense.

Opening odds

The NFL offers up its annual Monday Night Football doubleheader in Week 1 to open the season, and the first game of the evening means the regular-season debut for New York Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold. The Jets are traveling to face Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions.

The line for this game opened in April as six-point favorites at the Westgate SuperBook. Even with the Jets moving forward with a rookie quarterback, the line has settled in at 6.5 points at most sportsbooks, according to OddsShark. The point sits at 45 points.

The first injury report for Monday Night Football does not arrive until Thursday, but it is likely to include Jets wide receiver Jermaine Kearse. He had surgery for an abdomen injury late in training camp and is expected to miss the season opener. Robby Anderson is their top receiver, with Quincy Enunwa expected to see a boost in targets in Kearse’s absence.

The Lions are looking healthy, with their biggest question being the running back depth chart. Detroit spent a second round pick on Kerryon Johnson, but they will be using a running back by committee out of the gate.

The Jets finished last season dropping five of seven against the spread. Although they finished the season 5-11, they were strong against the spread in the middle of the season, going 6-0-1 ATS between Week 3 and Week 9. The Lions were inconsistent much of the season en route to a 9-7 record. They closed out the season winning three of four against the spread and straight up.
