Australian Open 2011 Tennis Results For Tuesday: Kim Clijsters Through To Second Round After Historic Rout Of Dinara Safina
• No. 3 Kim Clijsters def. Dinara Safina 6-0, 6-0.
Yeeowch. Even the way Safina’s been struggling lately, there’s no excuse for this. According to the WTA, a world No. 1 has never been shut out following the attainment of the top ranking. Clijsters felt so guilty afterwards that she actually apologized in the post-match press conference:
“I do feel bad,” Clijsters told reporters after whitewashing the Russian.
“I even caught myself at 5-0 in the second set, she hit a couple of backhands down the line, I was like ‘Yeah, that’s it!’
“When she doesn’t play against me, I’m rooting for her because I want her to get back into it and build confidence.”
Next up for Clijsters: Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain. Next for Safina, who knows?
• No. 5 Samantha Stosur def. Lauren Davis 6-1, 6-1.
A loss for the Americans but a welcome win for a daughter of Australia as the Brisbane native cruised to victory in Rod Laver Arena. Stosur draws Russia’s Vera Dushevina in Round 2.
• No. 2 Vera Zvonareva def. Sybille Bammer 6-2, 6-1.
No challenge for the 2-seed from Russia in the first round, and likely none in the second, either, where she’ll meet Serbia’s Bojana Jovanovski.
• No. 7 Jelena Jankovic def. Alla Kudryavtseva 6-0, 7-6 (7-5).
The Russian qualifier put up a hardy second-set fight, but Jankovic moves on to face China’s Shuai Peng.
• Ekaterina Makarova def. No. 19 Ana Ivanovic 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.
Finally, a notable upset in the first round. Ivanovic credits the loss to an abdominal injury, but no matter: It’s Makarova who advances to meet Ukrainian Lesya Tsurenko.
• Klara Zakopalova def. Melanie Oudin 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
Down goes another American sweetheart, and with no word of her footwear! Next up for Zakopalova: No. 31 Lucie Safarova.
