Australian Open 2011 Tennis Results, Day 4: Kim Clijsters Dominates; Jelena Jankovic Upset

Scores and highlights from Day 4 of the Australian Open 2011. Here’s what went down Down Under in the women’s draw:
• No. 3 Kim Clijsters def. Carla Suarez Navarro, 6-1 6-3.
Clijsters has only lost four games in two rounds, and she’s not pregnant! The woman can do it all! Her next match should be a bit more interesting: Across the net will be upstart Alize Cornet of France.
• No. 5 Samantha Stosur def. Vera Dushevina, 6-3 6-2.
Another win for the last remaining Aussie in the women’s draw. Next up for Stosur, a seeded opponent: No. 25 Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic.
• Peng Shuai def. No. 7 Jelena Jankovic, 7-6 (7-3) 6-3.
The first top-ten seed falls, and in straight sets, too!. It’s hardly surprising, given Jankovic’s play in her last few tournament matches, but she barely put up a fight for this one. Peng advances to face Ayumi Morita of Japan in Round 3.
• No. 2 Vera Zvonareva def. Bojana Jovanovski, 2-6 6-3 6-1.
Down goes our favorite name in the women’s draw. On goes the 2-seed to take on No. 31 Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic in the third.
• No. 10 Shahar Peer def. Sorana Cirstea, 6-3 6-2.
Peer has a spotty history here, prone to crashing out in the first round but with a 2007 quarterfinals bid to her name. She draws a seeded opponent in Round 3: No. 22 Flavia Pennetta of Italy.
• No. 12 Agnieszka Radwanska def. Petra Martic, 6-3 6-4.
No flying racquet heads this time around, and an advantageous draw for Radwanska, at least on paper: Rookie Simona Halep of Romania is playing in her very first Aussie Open.
• Alize Cornet def. No. 26 Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, 7-5 6-1.
Here’s one to watch, as Cornet hopes to follow up her surprising run to the fourth round in ‘09, her first such trip since turning pro in 2005. She’s got quite the wall to scale in Round 3, however: No. 3 Clijsters is a daunting opponent for even a seasoned player.
