Australian Open 2011 Day 7 offered plenty of action, including the upset of Andy Roddick by Stan Wawrinka, and the longest women’s match in Grand Slam history. Here are the full scores and results:
Australian Open 2011 Results, Day 7: Andy Roddick Falls; Francesca Schiavone Wins Marathon
Stanislas Wawrinka defeats Andy Roddick, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. For Roddick, it’s the fourth Grand Slam in a row in which he has failed to reach the quarterfinals. Wawrinka moves on to face his good friend Roger Federer, both from Switzerland and former Olympic doubles teammates.
Roger Federer defeats Tommy Robredo, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Federer’s path to the quarterfinals hasn’t been flawless — he’s dropped several sets — but he cruised past un-seeded Robredo fairly easily after a slight stumble in the second set.
Novak Djokovic defeats Nicolas Almagro, 6-3, 6-4, 6-0. The No. 3 seed has looked strong throughout the Australian Open, and the fourth round was no exception. Novak dismissed the No. 19 seed in under 90 minutes.
Tomas Berdych defeats Fernando Verdasco, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3. Tomas’ win sets up what should be a great quarterfinal match-up with Djokovic. Both have played great throughout, and both possess powerful ground strokes that should make for an entertaining contest.
Caroline Wozniacki defeats Anastasija Sevastova, 6-3, 6-4. The women’s top seed appears to be destined for the finals as she has cruised through the field thus far.
Andrea Petkovic defeats Maria Sharapova, 6-2, 6-3. A disappointing result for Sharapova as she continues her comeback to the top of the women’s game.
Na Li defeats Victoria Azarenka, 6-3, 6-3. Li more than doubled the amount of winners that Azarenka had in route to a quarterfinal berth.
Francesca Schiavone defeats Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-4, 1-6, 16-14. And this is why it’s awesome to not have final set tiebreakers in majors. These two played the longest women’s singles match in Grand Slam history, going nearly five hours before the French Open champ finally took the victory.
