Scores and highlights from Day 10 of the Australian Open 2011. The men’s and women’s semifinal fields are set. Who’s playing on, and how’d they get there?
• No. 7 David Ferrer def. No. 1 Rafael Nadal, 6-4 6-2 6-3.
Who’s happy this morning? Andy Murray, who now draws a 7-seed instead of the world No. 1 in the semifinals. Who’s not? Perhaps Roger Federer, who’s been on a hot winning streak the past couple months and is now denied (along with the viewing audience) a possible 1-2 matchup in the finals.
• No. 3 Kim Clijsters def. No. 12 Agnieska Radwanska, 6-3 7-6 (7-4).
The already-injured Clijsters said she felt “a little bit tired and heavy out there,” and played unusually erroneous tennis, but ground out a second-set tiebreaker victory in Rod Laver Arena to advance to the semifinals for the fifth time in her career.
• No. 2 Vera Zvonareva def. No. 25 Petra Kvitova, 6-2 6-4.
Said to be uncomfortable with the extra attention that followed her first-ever trip to the Aussie Open quarterfinals, Kvitova can relax now. Her ousting took just over an hour, and Zvonareva is through to the semis and a rematch with Clijsters.
• No. 5 Andy Murray def. Alexandr Dolgopolov, 7-5 6-3 6-7 (7-3) 6-3.
The unseeded Ukrainian put forth a noble effort in his first-ever Aussie Open, but Murray’s roll in this tournament has yet to be slowed for long, and ensured that no pipsqueak upstart players remain as men’s and women’s singles play moves to the semifinal round.
