For those of you rooting for the triumph of innate athleticism over the distraction of home and family, you’ll be pleased to know Roger Federer has made short work of his first-round 2011 French Open opponent, World No. 41 Feliciano Lopez of Spain. In just a shade under two hours, the World No. 3 dispatched his opponent in straight sets, 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7-3). It was a largely clean and bloodless match, with only moderate amounts of errors on the part of both players, but Federer capitalized on, among other things, three double faults by Lopez to stay comfortably out in front.

With Novak Djokovic’s first-round victory over Thiemo De Bakker already in the bag, all that remains is for Rafael Nadal to make short work of American John Isner to send tennis’ modern triumvirate on intact to the second round at Roland Garros.
