French Open 2011, Day 2 Results: Tomas Berdych Upset; Mardy Fish And Gael Monfils Win

Scores and highlights from Day 2 of the 2011 French Open. One top-ten seed was sent packing from Roland Garros in first-round play, but the rest of the day in the men’s draw was relatively quiet and full of quickly decided matches.

• Stephane Robert def. No. 6 Tomas Berdych, 3-6 3-6 6-2 6-2 9-7.
As first-round upsets go, this is about as high as possible a loss as you’ll see in the first round at this tournament on the men’s side, barring an injury-related exit on the part of Andy Murray or some other disaster. Berdych will not repeat his 2010 run to the semis after losing to -- zut alors! -- a qualifier. (Is there some French word for these scrub players that infuses just a soupçon of contempt into an otherwise innocuous collection of syllables? There has to be, right?) Robert will face Fabio Fognini (real name!) of Italy (where else?) in Round 2.

• No. 9 Gael Monfils def. Bjorn Phau, 4-6 6-3 7-5 6-0.
• No. 10 Mardy Fish def. Ricardo Mello, 6-2 6-7(11) 6-2 6-4.
The rest of the top ten acquitted themselves respectably, with France’s Monfils coming out a little too relaxed but recovering admirably, and Fish keeping faint American hopes alive at Roland Garros for one more day. Monfils draws countryman Guillame Rufin next; Fish, either Robin Haase or Daniel Gimeno-Traver.

• Marcel Granollers def. Alex Bogomolov Jr., 6-3 3-6 7-6(6) 6-2.
The American field is further narrowed, albeit unsurprisingly, with the loss of 86th-ranked Bogomolov.

Other scores from seeded players on Day 2, including two upsets of twentysomethings:
• No. 12 Mikhail Youzhny def. Go Soeda, 7-5 6-2 6-4.

• No. 13 Richard Gasquet def. Radek Stepanek, 7-5 6-3 6-0.

• No. 15 Viktor Troicki def. Julian Reister, 6-4 6-3 6-3.

• Steve Darcis def. No. 22 Michael Llodra, 6-7(5) 6-3 6-3 6-3.

• No. 23 Thomas Bellucci def. Andrey Golubev, 6-4 6-4 6-7(4) 7-6(5).

• No. 25 Juan Martin Del Potro def. Ivo Karlovic, 6-7(7) 6-3 7-5 6-4.

• Michael Berrer def. No. 26 Milos Raonic, 6-4 4-6 6-3 6-4.

• No. 28 Nikolay Davydenko def. Denis Gremelmayr, 7-6(2) 6-1 6-3.

• No. 29 Janko Tipsarevic def. Brian Dabul, 7-6(1) 6-1 6-0.

• No. 27 Marcos Baghdatis def. Frederico Gil, 7-6(4) 6-2 6-2.
