French Open 2011 Results: Kim Clijsters Upset In Second Round

Kim Clijsters’ comeback tour has come to an abrupt stop at Roland Garros, as the World No. 2 was eliminated by unseeded Arantxa Rus in the second round of the French Open 2011, 3-6 7-5 6-1. Along with her chance for a calendar Grand Slam, Clijsters’ shot at the too-rare single-season Grand Slam is eliminated. It’s a chance that may never come again, given her talk of retirement following the 2012 Olympics.

Chris Fowler, on the scene in Paris, called the match a “complete implosion,“ and with 65 errors to her name in three sets, including two blown match points in the second, it’s hard to argue the point. Clijsters has logged next to no time on clay this season thanks to multiple injuries (she’d only been back in practice from ankle rehab for two weeks prior to this tournament), and hasn’t played in a French Open since 2006, but looked perhaps more unhinged this morning than those circumstances warranted.

It’ll be a less interesting and less sunny tournament without her, and doesn’t really do all that much to clear up the women’s field. Caroline Wozniacki, Maria Sharapova, and Li Na all remain in play. Next up for Rus: The World No. 114 faces No. 25 Maria Kirilenko of Russia in Round 3.
