French Open 2011 results from Day 10 at Roland Garros, where Roger Federer advanced in straight sets and is still, somehow, an afterthought.
French Open 2011 Results: Francesca Schiavone To Meet Marion Bartoli In Semis; Bryans Postponed
• No. 3 Roger Federer def. No. 9 Gael Monfils, 6-4 6-3 7-6(3).
Federer finally merits a match on Court Philippe Chatrier, and hasn’t dropped a set in Paris this entire tourney, but if he does, don’t forget, it’s because of his hot wife and kids! Will meet No. 2 Novak Djokovic, who you may have heard is on a bit of a hot streak, in the semis. (Didn’t see Djoko’s quarters play? No, you didn’t. The fantabulously-named Fabio Fognini game him a walkover thanks to a thigh injury. Like he needs the help right now. Federer brushed off the implications of this in his post-match presser, reminding the audience he’s faced a similar situation at Wimbledon, where he seems to do all right.)
• No. 4 Andy Murray def. No. 15 Viktor Troicki, 4-6 4-6 6-3 6-2 7-5.
Do not adjust your clotted cream IV drips. That was, in fact, Andy Murray coming through in a high-pressure situation. Don't worry; he still looked miserable the whole time. He's still got his quarters match to play, versus Argentina's unranked interloper, Juan Ignacio Chela.
• No. 5 Francesca Schiavone def. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 1-6 7-5 7-5.
The women’s draw remains a complete minefield, but at least we won’t have to type “Pavlyuchenkova” anymore. Next up for the defending Roland Garros champ: Marion Bartoli in the semis.
• No. 11 Marion Bartoli def. No. 13 Svetlana Kuznetsova, 7-6(4) 6-4.
Easily the most energetic match of the morning, with fireworks from both players not entirely suited to the quiet court Suzanne Lenglen.
In American news, the men’s doubles team of Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram were defeated by the fourth-ranked duo of Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic. Vania King has reached the women’s doubles semifinals with her partner, Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan. The fourth-ranked women’s team of Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond knocked off Victoria Azarenka and Maria Kirilenko for their own semis berth, possibly setting up a three-quarters American field for the final. And the Brothers Bryan are tied at one set all against Bopanna-Qureshi in men’s doubles quarterfinals, currently 5-5 in the third set. The match has been called on account of darkness and will resume play tomorrow.
Play on Day 11 of the French Open 2011 will begin at 8 a.m. EDT, with the conclusion of singles quarterfinals matches.
