French Open 2011 Results: Maria Sharapova And Li Na To Meet In Semis

French Open 2011 results from Day 11 at Roland Garros, where two familiar Americans still hold sway in the doubles draw and the two strongest women in the singles draw move towards a regrettable collision in the semis.

• No. 6 Li Na def. No. 4 Victoria Azarenka, 7-5 6-2.
Despite a close first set, Azarenka played with disinterested energy; Li, of course, was anything but, and we celebrate her ascendancy, because the more matches she wins, the more cheerfully arrogant televised interviews we get to see. It’s the disappointment of the tournament that either she or Sharapova will have to be knocked out before the final.

• No. 7 Maria Sharapova def. No. 15 Andrea Petkovic, 6-0 6-3.
Not to harp at this too much, but a Li-Sharapova final would be a delight, and both are more interesting prospects than either Schiavone or Bartoli. The specter of a career Grand Slam still floats just out of reach for Sharapova, but the path to the cup is freer of obstacles than anyone could have imagine two weeks ago.

In American news, the brothers Bryan completed their postponed quarterfinals match against Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, defeating the Indian-Pakistani duo by a final score of 6-7(2) 6-3 7-6(3). The twins’ semifinal opponents will be Juan Sebastian Cabal of Colombia and the delightfully-named Eduardo Schwank of Argentina.

Still in play on Court Philippe Chatrier are Rafael Nadal and Robin Söderling, while Court Suzane Lenglen features Andy Murray taking on unseeded upstart Juan Ignacio Chela.
