French Open 2011 Results: Li Na Defeats Maria Sharapova To Advance To Finals

French Open 2011 results from Day 12 at Roland Garros, where half the field for the women’s final is set.

No. 6 Li Na def. No. 7 Maria Sharapova, 6-4 7-5. Sharapova’s lingering serve problems did her in on a blustery day, with ten double faults and zero aces giving Li the edge on Court Philippe Chatrier.

One of the toplining stories heading into the French Open 2011 was Maria Sharapova’s potential to complete a career Grand Slam with a win in Paris. With a widely-flung women’s field to begin with and the top four seeds all out of contention by the semis, the way was paved.

But if you want compelling drama, Li Na’s story is the one to beat. She became the first Chinese player to reach the finals of a major tournament this past January in Melbourne, where the only woman who could beat her was Kim Clijsters. Clijsters isn’t here, and Li will seek the first Slam victory for a Chinese player while facing either a hometown favorite in Marion Bartoli or the defending champion Francesca Schiavone.
