Journeyman American Alex Bogomolov, Jr. pulled off only the third grand slam of his career Wednesday at the All-England Club, defeating No. 25 seed Juan Ignacio Chela 6-0, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round Gentlemen’s Singles match at Wimbledon 2011.
Wimbledon 2011 Results: American Alex Bogomolov Upsets No. 25 Juan Ignacio Chela
Bogomolov is already at a career high ATP ranking of No. 72, which could climb as many as ten places based on his strong showing at SW19. He will face defending finalist No. 6 Tomas Berdych in the third round.
It is yet to be seen if any penalties will follow this win, as they have in Bogomolov’s previous two slam victories. At the 2006 Australian Open Bogomolov was fined $4,500 for verbal abuse during his shocking upset win over No. 9 Fernando Gonzalez, and another verbal abuse fine followed his first round win at this tournament over compatriot Donald Young, with a price tag this time of $3,000.
Aside from his temper, Bogomolov is perhaps most famous for once being married to fellow American player Ashley Harkleroad, who herself is probably most famous for retiring shortly after posing for Playboy.
For making the third round, Bogomolov is guaranteed at least £34,375 ($55,450 US) in prize money, a real nice payday for a guy who often played tournaments where the total purse was less than that. Fifty-five thousand dollars pays for a whole lot of swearing.
