No. 32 Tsvetana Pironkova def. No. 2 Vera Zvonareva 6-2, 6-3. For the second straight year at Wimbledon, Tsvetana Pironkova lost only five games on her way to bouncing the No. 2 seed from the tournament.
Wimbledon 2011 Results: No. 2 Vera Zvonareva Wins Only Five Games In Upset By No. 32 Tsvetana Pironkova
In a rematch of their Wimbledon 2010 semifinal, which Zvonareva won in three close sets, Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova cruised from beginning to end in their third round clash on Court 2, bouncing the defending finalist 6-2, 6-3.
Zvonareva appeared to tweak her ankle late in the first set, but its not likely that a healthier Zvonareva would have been able to fare any better against Pironkova’s incredible anticipation and angles today.
Pironkova was a lowly 4-18 before this tournament, but she has been absolutely ruthless at the All-England Club over the last two years. It’s an odd turn in Pironkova’s career, because prior to 2010 she had only won one match at Wimbledon, boasting a lowly 1-4 record.
Pironkova next gets a rematch with Venus Williams, who she will try to beat for the third time at a grand slam. Know the other players who have beaten Venus three times at a grand slam? Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters, Lindsay Davenport, Martina Hingis, and that’s it. All the others have won at least three grand slams. Not bad company to keep.
