Ksenia Pervak def. No. 11 Andrea Petkovic 6-4, 7-6(2). An unexpected defeat for the popular German, but not an altogether shocking one. Petkovic has been over-achieving at the last several slams, having made it to the second week of the last three. But she looked pretty awful in her second round win over lucky loser Stephanie Dubois. Petkovic still has plenty to look forward to in Wimbledon 2011: doubles with Ana Ivanovic, mixed doubles with [today’s big winner] Feliciano Lopez, and wonderfully perverted tweets from Andy Murray’s mother.
Wimbledon 2011 Results: No. 11 Andrea Petkovic, No. 12 Svetlana Kuznetsova Upset
No. 19 Yanina Wickmayer def. No. 12 Svetlana Kuznetsova 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. I learned long ago to never be surprised at any Kuznetsova result, though certainly this one is hardly an enormous surprise. In what I’m sure was a match of nuanced court-craft and finesse (/sarcasm), Yanina Wickmayer made it into the second week of Wimbledon for the first time. She next faces No. 8 Petra Kvitova, who she will lose to.
