No. 5 Maria Sharapova def. WC Laura Robson 7-6(4), 6-3. For the second straight slam, Maria Sharapova was given a stiff challenge by a teenage wild card playing in her home slam in the second round. Seventeen year-old Briton Laura Robson, who catapulted herself into the tennis spotlight by winning the Wimbledon Girls’ Singles title in 2008 at the age of fourteen, followed in the footsteps of fellow seventeen year-old Caroline Garcia, who pushed Sharapova to the brink in a three-set filler at the French Open last month. Robson raced out to a 3-0 lead to open the match, but Sharapova was able to fight her way back and eventually use her big-match experience to outlast the English hopeful. Robson definitely has a big future ahead of her, and should have many a deep run at Wimbledon in her career.
Wimbledon 2011 Results: No. 5 Maria Sharapova, No. 9 Marion Bartoli Survive Scares
No. 9 Marion Bartoli def. Lourdes Dominguez Lino 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Wimbledon 2007 finalist Marion Bartoli was extremely close to joining the ranks of fallen seeds, but saved three match points in the second set to stave off Dominguez Lino, who really shouldn’t be giving Bartoli any sort of scare on a fast grass court. Bartoli complained after the match that Court 3 was playing as slowly as a clay court, which would explain the difficulty she had with the less aggressive Dominguez Lino.
