While rain falls yet again at the All-England Club (that roof sure is nice, eh USTA?), here’s a look at the men’s matches already in the books on Day 5 which we haven’t yet covered:
Wimbledon 2011 Results: David Ferrer, Jurgen Melzer, Richard Gasquet, Bernard Tomic Advance
No. 7 David Ferrer def. Ryan Harrison 6-7(6), 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. In a continuation of a match that began yesterday (during which we issued an “upset alert”), David Ferrer outlasted up-and-coming American Ryan Harrison, winning eight of the eleven games played today to close out the match. It’s been a very solid Wimbledon for clay court aficionados, with both David Ferrer, Gael Monfils, and Nicolas Almagro all able to string together several wins.
No. 11 Jurgen Melzer def. Dmitry Tursunov 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(1). The quiet Austrian made it past the unpredictable and dangerous Russian, an especially nice win given Tursunov’s title last week on grass in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
No. 17 Richard Gasquet def. LL Simone Bolelli 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. The 2007 Wimbledon semifinalist made short work of lucky loser Simone Bolelli, booking his spot in what would be a highly anticipated fourth round match against Andy Murray, a rematch of their 2008 fourth round encounter which Murray won from two sets down.
Q Bernard Tomic def. Igor Andreev 4-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-1. The controversial Australian makes it to the third round of a slam for the second time in 2011 with an impressive come-from-behind victory over fading Igor Andreev. Tomic passes Lleyton Hewitt as top-ranked Aussie with the win.
